Family Literacy Kit

This Family Literacy Kit is designed to support families to use evidence-based literacy practices at home. The Family Literacy Kit is centered on the idea that repeated readings for different purposes of a singular text is an evidence-based strategy that supports increased word knowledge, fluency and comprehension. The Kit consists of four reasons/purposes to reread a text that incorporate activities for word work, fluency and comprehension building. The activities can be used by migratory parents/families who are not literate in English and/or a home language. The strategies can be used in any language.

Reading Rockets

These one-page parent tip sheets from Reading Rockets offer easy ways for parents to support their children's literacy development. The tips — for babies through grade 3 — are available in English and 12 other languages. Use the tip sheets to guide parents to support language and literacy development at home in any language.

Preschool Language and Literacy Learning at Home

This language and literacy module was developed by the former family engagement consortium, the Preschool Initiative, to provide MEP staff with important information about language and literacy development to share with the parents they work with. The module includes parent activities that staff can integrate into their parent engagement events. Each link will download the document featured in that link.

Preschool Reading and Math Learning Kit

The Preschool Initiative, a former family engagement consortium, created easy-to-use Learning Kits for in-home use with preschool migratory children. The kits contain all the materials, books and activity cards needed to conduct the activities. Using this resource, staff can guide children through the activities such as making predictions, retelling events in the stories, sorting shapes, and making patterns. Parents are encouraged to join the fun and continue the activities. These are intended to use for home-based/outreach sessions, can be carried out with minimal training, and are easily replicated. Preschool Resource Rubrics

The former family engagement consortium Preschool Initiative created four rubrics that provide information on curricula and learning materials for year-long preschool (pre-k) programs, summer pre-k and JumpStart to kindergarten programs, and parent training/home instruction.
